Today's reading homework is A Cow in Town.  We're really flying through these phonetic books; many of the students are finding them very easy to read - great to see!

We have skating tomorrow afternoon from 2:00 - 3:00.  Please send skates, a helmet, and appropriate clothing.

To help out with our community's Auto-Immune Awareness Day, all students are invited to wear PJs to school this Friday.  Let's see how many PJ-clad people we'll have in Room Four!  Also our class, along with the Grade One students from last year, have been invited to perform again at this year's street party this Friday.  Interested and available tudents should meet with their parents at the old firehall (directly across from the post office) at 6:30 to perform at 6:40.  Marta Rode will lead the students in singing Will I Am's "What I Am" song.  (Google "Will I Am Sesame Street to watch the song - it's a great one!)  Everyone is invited to wear their PJs under their parkas, and to participate in the mini street party that will follow the performance.  There'll be a rail jam, adult street hockey, live music, and Mike Day's hotdog stand!  Sounds like fun!  For more information, go to findthecommonthread.com

This Wednesday afternoon we'll be participating in the Winter Carnaval at the ball diamond park.  Please ensure that your child is prepared for an afternoon of outdoor physical activities and games.

This Friday we'll begin a Show and Tell program.  Every Friday the students will select a theme-based show and tell item to present to the class. A note will go home Mondays so the students can write about their selections, then they'll read their writings as they offer their show and tell treasures to the class Friday afternoons.  This week's theme is "Twinkle and Tell" - they should choose anything shiny or sparkly to write about and show the class.

Word of the day: century

Book of the day: The Pet Poodle  This is the tale of a pooch that gets into a bit of trouble.  A video showing a few other pet friends getting into some trouble follows.  Just click on the address below.  Enjoy!

The first graders are going xc skiing tomorrow morning, weather permitting.  Please ensure your child has warm mitts, a hat, and a hoodie to wear under their winter coats for this activity.  Thanks.

The fifth grade FRIM class is hosting a cookie sale tomorrow.  Dig out those quarters!

What a super assembly we were treated to today!  Jason Bartsiokas gave a presentation on his amazing artistic helmets - very impressive!  As well, the students showcased a lot of circus talent in a very polished presentation - one that included a strong man, a magician, some clowning around, a juggler, a pair of acrobats and some "hoopsters".  Lots of  students from Room Four got dressed up for the event.  Here's a peek at how they looked!

The first graders had a fun morning on their cross-country skis.  Here's some photos of our first xc ski event.

We are planning to ski again tomorrow - weather permitting, of course.  As well, we are planning to go sliding at Centennial Park tomorrow afternoon, leaving right after afternoon attendance.  Please send appropriate clothing, a ski helmet, and something to slide on tomorrow.  (Don't worry if you don't have a helmet or a sled - the school has helmets to borrow and we can share sleds.)

Remember that the student council is inviting everyone to wear pink or red tomorrow, to help celebrate Valentine's Day.

It's been a busy week - beginning with the celebration of Hundred Day on Monday.  We did lots of things in 100s, including constructing creations with 100 pieces.

The at-home reading for today is The Brave Hunter.  Enjoy!

February 12, 2014

I must begin this blog with a set of apologies: first for the long lapses between postings this year (I'll try to improve!) and then for omitting some names from yesterday's class list.  Just to be extra sure you've got a comprehensive list of all 28 students from Room Four, here are the names:

Keaton, Psalm, Ella, Kelly, Callum, Selin, Jackson, Seth, Brooklyn, Tyler, Hana, Angelic, Rowan, Addi, Logan, Chloe O., Cadence, Murphy, Angelo, Briezja, Kairos, Thomas, Ethan, Tajay, Chloe M., Theo, Beenadd, Bella

Please remember that if your child is bringing Valentines to school, they should bring one for every student, so that nobody feels left out.  Thanks.

I would also like to extend a colossal thank-you to everyone who has helped make our teacher appreciation week such a special one.  Your efforts and attention have been amazing - what an outstanding school community we have!  And, to put the cherry on the icing on the cake of this week, my name was drawn for a special prize this morning!  The whole grade one class trooped down to the office to select a gift.  We were lucky enough to choose a Pick Up Sticks game - something the whole class can use and enjoy!

The school council has invited students and staff to dress up as a circus character for tomorrow afternoon's assembly.  Also, the school council has asked students to bring a working flashlight, covered with coloured cellophane, if possible, for tomorrow afternoon's assembly.

The student council is inviting students to wear pink or red for Valentine's Day this Friday.  Let's see how many people can dig out a splash of one of those colours to wear.

The grade one students will be going cross country skiing at the soccer pitch tomorrow morning, if the weather holds.  (We won't go if it's colder than minus 10.)  Parents, please make sure that your child has a warm hat and mittens to wear for this activity.  Also, if possible, please send a hoodie to school with your child so they can wear if under their winter jacket.  Active cross-country skiing can generate tons of body heat, and the students often ask to take off their jackets, so it's nice to have a hoodie on to bridge the gap between a sweltering parka and a too-cold t-shirt.

The grade one word of the day is "futile".  The at-home reading selection is "The Lost Horse", a book reviewing the "or" sound.
