October 31, 2016

Happy Hallowe'en! Thanks so much to everyone who sent treats for our party this afternoon! Stay tuned for some great photos of the wonderful costumes everyone came up with.

There is no golden envelope reading for the first graders tonight, but you can dive into the Hallowe'en book that the students got as a Hallowe'en reading treat! Enjoy!

Just a quick reminder that Hallowe'en candy should stay home, where it's safe and sound from hungry teachers (just kidding).  Hallowe'en treats need to be eaten at home; thanks for understanding, parents.

October 28, 2016

Excitement is about to reach fever pitch here in Room Four; Hallowe'en is just about upon us! The first grade students will be having a Hallowe'en party in Mrs. Lawson's room in the afternoon on Monday. The second grade students will be having a party here in Room Four that afternoon. Students are invited to dress in costume for the afternoon, and the second grade parents who'd like to send something for our treat table are most welcome to do so  - with our thanks!

I'd also like the second grade students to bring a small (just a one-person size) fruit juice for the afternoon, as a contribution to the witch brew we'll be concocting.  Thanks!

Both grade one and grade two students have spelling test books that need to be signed and returned Monday morning.

Enjoy the weekend!

Remember both grade one and grade two classes will be visiting the Haunted House in Mrs. Sawka's room tomorrow; dig out those $2.00 coins!

Both grade one and grade two students have spelling tests tomorrow. Study hard!

We wrote list of what scares us in Grade Two and took photos depicting fear. (Some students even managed to make their hair stand on its end!) Here are some of the photos:

October 25, 2016

Remember that tomorrow is picture day! Practice those smiles and show up with your best-looking self!

The grade two students will be visiting the Haunted House with Mrs. MacDonald in Mrs. Sawka's class this Friday. The grade one students will do the same thing with Mrs. Lawson - again on Friday, October 28. Admission to the Haunted House is $2.00.  All proceeds go to Plan Canada to support needy families and communities around the globe.

Just a quick reminder to check the golden envelopes every day; yesterday there were a couple of notes in the envelopes, and I didn't get a chance to post an entry on this blog. Hopefully everyone found the notes!

The at-home reading tonight is a book on Hallowe'en colours. Check to see if your child can point out words that you randomly select on the pages they read. As always, these student-made books can stay at home.

October 20, 2016

Remember that tomorrow is a non-student day. Enjoy the long weekend!

Keep up the great work with the golden envelope reading program! Also, take a look at the missing letters slips of paper in the agenda pockets each day. These assignments really help the students break words apart and hear the sound ingredients of each word - essential building blocks for establishing good reading!

There will be a Hallowe'en costume parade on the afternoon of October 31, in case anyone is in a mood to shop or create some scary apparel this weekend ... Stay tuned for more about this spooky event next week...

October 19, 2016

Here are today's reminders:

1. There will be a cookie sale tomorrow morning.

2. There is no school for students this Friday.

3. Info on next week's school photos and on a electronics recycling initiative went home yesterday.

4. Remember all the grade one students have a book to read for their golden envelope reading.

October 18, 2016

Here are some reminders/announcements for the upcoming week:

1. There is no school for students this Friday. Teachers will be attending an institute day.

2. There is no spelling test for Grade One or Grade Two this week.

3. There will be a cookie sale this Thursday. Dig out those quarters!

4. The grade one students have "mystery letter sentences" in the front pockets of their agendas. They are replicas of the morning messages I print on the board every morning, and are excellent practice for figuring out which sounds are missing, and how to represent those missing sounds.

5. We've set up a new system for outdoor/indoor shoes storage for the first graders.  They are now keeping their shoes at the landing of the stairs at their entrance.  Hopefully we'll have fewer shoe situations from now on!

Here's a photo of the Grade One class with Indigo and Scarlet! What a good-looking bunch!

October 13, 2016

There will be a spelling test tomorrow for both first and second graders.  Study hard!

The first grade students have a Hallowe'en book in their golden envelopes to read to a willing audience tonight.  There is no need to return this book to the school; your home library just got a little bit bigger!

The first graders have been practicing counting to 100 - by ones, fives, and tens.  Parents, check out your child and see how well they're doing with this!

Homework for Grade One tonight: Read the golden envelope book.

There is a note in the Grade One golden envelope regarding a pumpkin decorating event here at the library.

The second graders finished up some witch biographies today - and did an amazing job! We'll try to find somewhere to post the bios soon.  Stand by!

October 11, 2016

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving weekend and got their fill of turkey and all the trimmings!
It was a chilly start to our week today - minus 9 on the thermometer at my house.  Brrr. Please ensure that all the warm clothing you're sending to school with your child has their name CLEARLY written inside; lost items can be returned to owners much more quickly when names are inside.

There is an open house tonight at the fire hall - from 6:00 until 7:30. There should be lots of games and activities - as well as food, I understand - at the event. What great weather for it!

Our room was transformed into a spooky one over the weekend; the class had some fun exploring all the Hallowe'en decorations. Watch for some spooky books to come home soon in Grade One!

Thanks to everyone who sent back signed spelling test books. These test books will typically come home every Friday and should come back to school every Monday.

Remember to have your first grade child read the golden envelope book to you tonight, parents! Also, if you have time, try to do some counting with them. Some of the first graders get stuck when counting to 100 - especially when entering a new set of 10 - going from 29 to 30 or from 79 to 80, for example.

Book orders for Grade One went home today and are due back this Friday.

October 7, 2016

The first grade students have quite a full golden envelope today: a story to read to a willing audience, a spelling book to get a parent signature, and two Thanksgiving Day books. We began one on Thanksgiving colour in school (some of the students completed this one); the other is a Thanksgiving numbers book.  Both books support patterned reading, and the use of picture prompts: two strategies to help beginning readers succeed. Many sight words (words that the students should know just by looking at them) are present in the books, and some of the words there can be decoded by the student if they ask themselves, "What do I know about this word?" (They might know it starts with a "c", and the sound that usually goes with that letter, they might remember that a "y" at the end of a word often has the long e sound, they might know a word that rhymes with the word they're looking at, etc.)

Both grade one and grade two students have spelling test books to be signed and returned to school Tuesday morning.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent contributions to the food bank.  We used the cans/boxes today to count by 5's and 10s, to create patterns, and to create sorting systems; who knew how much you could learn from a can of soup!

Enjoy the long weekend, everyone! Happy Thanksgiving!

October 5, 2016

The first graders are starting a new part of their at-home learning today: reading to a parent! It only seems fair that your children should read to you, since you've spent so many hours reading to them! There should be a gold envelope in your child's backpack. Inside there'll be a book for them to read to you. (Your job is outlined on the envelope's attached paper.) Please print the book's title on the envelope, then send both book and envelope back to school the next day for another exciting literary installation to be chosen! (It's perfectly okay for the children to use pictures and patterning to help them read; these are valid reading strategies.) Have fun with this!

Remember that the first grade class is swimming tomorrow afternoon.

There is a school council meeting tonight upstairs at 7:00 in the staffroom.  We're still hoping to have someone volunteer for a class rep; feel free to attend tonight's meeting if the prospect tempts you!

There will be a noon dismissal for students this Friday.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to our ever-growing "Souper Sharing" stack of soup cans!

October 4, 2016

Reminders for tomorrow:

1. Grade One students are swimming first thing in the afternoon.

2. Keep up the great work with the book bag reading and activities!

3. We're still collecting soup - thanks so much to everyone who has contributed so far. Our pyramid of food is growing!
