January 30, 2017

Spelling lists for both grades are listed in the agendas.

Grade One book orders are due this Friday.

Notes regarding Carnaval went home this afternoon - for both grades.  Please read, sign, and return the permission form/volunteer form asap. Thanks.

The students really enjoyed the fresh snow today  - some enjoyed it so much that their mittens were pretty wet at the end of recess! Unfortunately, for lunch students, this meant they had no dry mittens to wear over the lunch outdoor break. If your child stays for lunch, it might be a good idea to send a spare pair of mittens so that they are assured to have something warm and dry to keep their hands toasty between 12:30 and 1:00.

We will have a "Sports and Tell" this Friday - for both grades one and two. The students should bring something sports-related to show the class. They should be able to talk for a few minutes about the sport that their chosen item represents, as well.

The first graders' golden envelope book tonight emphasizes the "or" sound while, of course, reviewing many of the sounds/phonetic rules we've encountered so far. Happy reading!

There is no spelling test for the second grade students this week. The first grade students will have their regular Friday morning spelling test. Study those words where the "y" sounds like an "I" at the
end!

The second grade students are bringing home a Reflection Sheet on yesterday's skating event at JPL. Parents, please review, complete, sign, and return the sheet to school tomorrow. Thanks!

There will be a noon dismissal for the students tomorrow.

Our very own public library has issued a challenge to all the residents of Jasper. We are in a competition with other Alberta communities to get the largest percentage of our population reading for at least 15 minutes tomorrow. If you'd like to support the library in their challenge, just read for at least 15 minutes tomorrow, then register your participation by phoning the library at 780 852 3652 or by emailing jasperlibrary@town.jasper.ab.ca or at #Readfor15Jasper on Twitter or Instagram. Let's get reading tomorrow, everyone! Spread the word!

Thanks to the people who helped out with the skating afternoon! We really appreciate your time and efforts!

There will be a noon dismissal for students this Friday. Cross your fingers for nice weather so the students can get outside and enjoy an afternoon in the fresh air!

The first grade golden envelope book tonight emphasizes the "ar" sound. Look for all the "ar" words: Mark, star, cardboard, etc.

January 24, 2017

Thanks so much to the people who volunteered to help out with the skating afternoon tomorrow. The first and second graders are both on the second bus, which leaves the school at 1:40. The students should be leaving the skating area at 3:00 and should return to the school by around 3:15. Please remember to send skates, helmets, warm clothing, and a water bottle. If you are driving to the Lodge and are planning to take your child home with you in your own vehicle, please search out your child's teacher and look them in the eye to tell them that you have taken your own child. (We'd hate to lose track of anybody!) Thanks.

There will be no spelling list for the second graders this week.

Keep up the golden envelope reading, all you first grade reading stars!

January 19, 2017

Tonight's golden envelope reading for the first graders concentrates on the "ch" sound. If you want an extra challenge for your child, have them write down all the "ch" words they find in the book.

Both grades have a spelling test tomorrow.

Both grades have Stuffy and Tell tomorrow.

There will be a small snack sale (one item per person, please) tomorrow at recess.

Remember that Monday is "Dress as a Book Character" or wear something that represents Canada.

January 18, 2017

Keep up the great golden envelope reading, everyone! Tonight's envelope stresses and reviews the "sh" sound. Some of the students have been remarking that they're finding the stories easy, and they're reading them with more expression - great to see!

Thanks to everyone who returned the signed skating permission forms. Hopefully the ice will hold out for next Wednesday afternoon ...

There will be a showing of the movie Homeward Bound in the gym tomorrow after school. If your child wants to attend, they should bring a toonie and meet in the gym at 3:30.

Remember that there will be a snack sale tomorrow at recess.

Remember that this Friday we are having a Stuffy and Tell Day where the children will bring a stuffy to school and tell us all about it!

Here are some reminders/notifications about upcoming events:

There will be a cookie/snack sale this Thursday morning at recess. Raid those quarter collections again!

This Friday we will have a Stuffy and Tell Day, where both the first and second graders are supposed to bring a stuffed animal/character from home and tell about it.

Next Monday the student council is sponsoring a Dress as a Storybook Character Day. Students are invited (but not required!) to dress as a character from a story, or to dress in something that represents Canada.

Please have all skating permission forms in by this Friday. If you need a replacement form, let me know and I'll round one up for you.  Thanks.

The first graders' book is all about the "X" today. As well, it reinforces all the rules and word families we've covered to date. Thanks so much for your support at home with the golden envelope reading. The more the students read, the better they get!

Thanks to everyone who supported our "Winterruption Day" today by sending summery objects/clothing with their children. Here is some photo evidence of our Winterruption Day. Enjoy!

Please sign and return the spelling test books that went home today.

Also, the first graders have a note/permission form in their golden envelopes. The note gives information regarding a upcoming school-wide skating activity at Jasper Park Lodge. Please sign and return the form asap.

Let's keep recording those Read-a-thon minutes on the home reading calendar sheets, everyone!

Have a great weekend!
