Happy St. Patrick's Day! The leprechaun surprised us today with a orange juice and a waffle treat - topped with green whipping cream, peaches and strawberries! Check out the pictures below.

Remember that tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day! Try to dig out something green to wear!

Also, remember to study for tomorrow's spelling test.

Thanks to all the first grade parents for supporting the new writing initiative in the daily at-home learning program. The at-home reading/writing reinforcements are very powerful aids to learning.

Yikes! I can't believe that I haven't posted anything for a week! Ulp! I'll try to get better!

I did want to make sure I posted these photos of our second grade fairy tale character depictions. We wrote interviews to go with the pictures - check out the bulletin board outside room four tomorrow!

Here are those photos:

The big news for today is that we are changing the home learning component for first grade students. First graders will now choose their own golden envelope book (within certain parameters, of course) and will write about their choices in a little notebook (tucked into the golden envelope). There are sentence starters glued into the inside cover of the writing book; please have your child vary the sentence starters they use, and have them colour or shade in a square beside the sentence starter, so that they (and I!) can see that they're using various beginnings to their written offering.

This writing component will definitely strengthen the students' reading - and vice versa. Thanks for your support with this.

Great job on the spelling test - for both grades today!

The first graders' book today concentrates on "au".  Enjoy!

Everyone looked very cozy today! We talked about Liu Bolin, an artist who paints himself into backgrounds. Click here to see some of his amazing creations! (The inspiration for looking at his art came from Barrett's pj outfit. We camouflaged him into our classroom plants! Enjoy the photo of him - and of our other pyjama-clad first graders ...)

Have fun in the snow this weekend! Woop woop!

Reminders for tomorrow:

Study for the spelling test.

Wear your pyjamas, if you'd like!

Bring a quarter for the cookie sale. (There'll be another small cookie sale tomorrow.)

Grade One students: practice the "ph" sound in tonight's book.

Happy International Compliments Day! All the first graders wrote compliments for each other this morning; what a nice way to show appreciation for others. It was as gratifying to give the compliments as it was to receive them!

The golden envelope book for tonight has lots of "ight" words in it.

There will be a cookie sale tomorrow at recess.

If you'd like to send your child in pajamas this Friday, feel free to do so! It's our community's PJ Day - in support of raising funds and research for auto-immune diseases.

The grade one word of the day was initial. The grade two word of the day was discard.

Newsletters were sent home electronically today, and hard copies were sent with students if their parent(s) have not signed up for electronic delivery. (Call Joyce Melnyk at 852 4447 if you'd like to sign up to receive newsletters electronically.)
