There is no golden envelope reading for the first graders tonight, but you can dive into the Hallowe'en book that the students got as a Hallowe'en reading treat! Enjoy!
Just a quick reminder that Hallowe'en candy should stay home, where it's safe and sound from hungry teachers (just kidding). Hallowe'en treats need to be eaten at home; thanks for understanding, parents.

Excitement is about to reach fever pitch here in Room Four; Hallowe'en is just about upon us! The first grade students will be having a Hallowe'en party in Mrs. Lawson's room in the afternoon on Monday. The second grade students will be having a party here in Room Four that afternoon. Students are invited to dress in costume for the afternoon, and the second grade parents who'd like to send something for our treat table are most welcome to do so - with our thanks!
I'd also like the second grade students to bring a small (just a one-person size) fruit juice for the afternoon, as a contribution to the witch brew we'll be concocting. Thanks!
Both grade one and grade two students have spelling test books that need to be signed and returned Monday morning.

Remember both grade one and grade two classes will be visiting the Haunted House in Mrs. Sawka's room tomorrow; dig out those $2.00 coins!

Remember that tomorrow is picture day! Practice those smiles and show up with your best-looking self!
The grade two students will be visiting the Haunted House with Mrs. MacDonald in Mrs. Sawka's class this Friday. The grade one students will do the same thing with Mrs. Lawson - again on Friday, October 28. Admission to the Haunted House is $2.00. All proceeds go to Plan Canada to support needy families and communities around the globe.
Just a quick reminder to check the golden envelopes every day; yesterday there were a couple of notes in the envelopes, and I didn't get a chance to post an entry on this blog. Hopefully everyone found the notes!
The at-home reading tonight is a book on Hallowe'en colours. Check to see if your child can point out words that you randomly select on the pages they read. As always, these student-made books can stay at home.

Remember that tomorrow is a non-student day. Enjoy the long weekend!
Keep up the great work with the golden envelope reading program! Also, take a look at the missing letters slips of paper in the agenda pockets each day. These assignments really help the students break words apart and hear the sound ingredients of each word - essential building blocks for establishing good reading!
There will be a Hallowe'en costume parade on the afternoon of October 31, in case anyone is in a mood to shop or create some scary apparel this weekend ... Stay tuned for more about this spooky event next week...

Here are some reminders/announcements for the upcoming week:
1. There is no school for students this Friday. Teachers will be attending an institute day.
2. There is no spelling test for Grade One or Grade Two this week.
3. There will be a cookie sale this Thursday. Dig out those quarters!
4. The grade one students have "mystery letter sentences" in the front pockets of their agendas. They are replicas of the morning messages I print on the board every morning, and are excellent practice for figuring out which sounds are missing, and how to represent those missing sounds.
5. We've set up a new system for outdoor/indoor shoes storage for the first graders. They are now keeping their shoes at the landing of the stairs at their entrance. Hopefully we'll have fewer shoe situations from now on!
