Word of the day: contract

Grade One students have completed the phonics-based reading selections and are now moving into a series of books that will keep their word attack/sight word skills sharpened.  After the spring break, we'll add a writing component to the daily homework.  Stay tuned for more information on this!

The student council is hosting a school spirit day tomorrow.  It's time to dress up in fancy clothes - or put on a moustache and a top hat! - and participate in Tip Top Day!  Can't wait to see what everyone will show up in tomorrow!

This Friday afternoon's show and share is going to be Book and Tell.  Writing sheets for this will go home tomorrow.  Start perusing your library's shelves!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!  We set a .leprechaun trap here in Room Four, but were unable to capture the leprechaun (or even a photo of him; the camera we cleveryly set up to spy on him was dismantled - its battery pack had been removed!).  The little Irish rascal did manage to cause a lot of trouble in our room, however.  What a mess we had to deal with!

The St. Patrick's Day link has lots of games and activities on it.  We're not able to acces it at school, but you should be able to jump on it at home.  Have fun rattling around on the link!

Grade One book of the day: The Mighty Mustangs

Tomorrow is our last day of skating this year.  Remember to send skates and helmets.

Report cards went home today.  Please return the report card's envelope, the interview request sheet, and the comment sheet tomorrow.  Thanks.  (There is no need to return the report card.)

The hummingbird web cam is back in business!  There are two eggs in the nest!  Now the countdown to the hatch begins!

(Review) word of the day: omit

Grade One book for the evening: The Square Egg

March newsletters went home today.  Remember your chid's name will be entered in a draw for prizes if you fill out the "Safe arrival of the Newsletter" form and have your child return the form to school.

The students are really improving their skating - great to see.  Thanks to all the parents who helped tie skates.  Thanks, too, to everyone who let me know they were picking their child up from the arena; it alleviates worry and communication problems when parents or guardians speak to me directly to let me know they've picked up their children.

Remember that book orders are due Friday.  Also, remember that the Winterruption sheet that went home today is due Friday - and that students are invited to bring summer clothing to wear Friday, as well.

March 3, 2014

It's hard to believe that March is already upon us; where is the year going?!

Tonight's reading  is entitled "Too Small".  Many of the students are getting much more fluent and reading with much greater expression in these phonetic books - great to see!

We are skating tomorrow afternoon, so please send skates and helmets.

Book orders went home today and are due Friday.

The students received replies to their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory letters today - some fun!

This Friday's Show and Tell theme will be "Winterruption and Tell", to help us get over this awful cold snap we've been enduring.  Students can bring a summertime item to share with the class.  The sheet for their written report will go home tomorrow.  Also, everyone is invited to wear summertime clothing - under their snowsuits, of course!
