October 30, 2017

A note regarding tomorrow afternoon's Hallowe'en party went home in the agendas today. If somehow the note got lost, please know that students are invited to dress up in costumes tomorrow afternoon. (Students who eat lunch at school can bring their costumes in their packs and get dressed over lunch hour.) Also, please send a small fruit juice box with your child tomorrow. We're planning on mixing everyone's juices together to make some lip-smacking swamp water! As well, if you'd like to send something for our treat table here in Room Four, that would be great! Thanks!

In case the day runs away with me tomorrow, I'll let everyone know now that there will be no home reading assigned for the first grade students tomorrow. I'll keep agendas and reading envelopes here until Wednesday; Hallowe'en is too exciting to interrupt with scholastic obligations!

There will be a noon dismissal for students this Friday. Teachers will be attending a professional development afternoon.

October 25, 2017

The first graders' at-home reading tonight concentrates on short "o" words. Enjoy!

There will be a snack sale tomorrow at recess. Please send fifty cents with your child if they are planning on purchasing something tasty to eat.

Please send an empty, clean plastic milk jug asap - any size will do. We have a cool art project planned!

Here are some photos of our trip to Whistler's Campground today. Thanks again to Alan's mom and to Carter S's mom for coming along with us.

October 24, 2017

Today's first grade at-home reading book concentrates on the "i" sound. Please return these little phonics books in the envelopes the morning after your child reads them. Thanks.

There is a note regarding tomorrow's field trip to Whistler Campground in the agenda pocket. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, and to send a bag lunch to school with your child tomorrow.

We are planning an art project that needs empty, clean plastic milk jugs. Any size will do. If you have some to donate to our artistic cause, please send them to school with your child. Thanks.

We did a cool Spooky Science activity: turning a bar of handsoap into a monster! Here's a photo showing what happens after you microwave a bar of Ivory Soap. (No other soap works, apparently ...)

October 23, 2017

The first graders are bringing home a book that concentrates on the short "a" sound for their home reading tonight. Please encourage your child to ask "What do I know about this word?" if they're stuck. Also, if they're having trouble figuring out some words, they may read in a halting, robotic voice. If this happens, have them try to reread the sentences smoothly.

Remember that tomorrow is photo day! Practise those smiles!

October 18, 2017

Please remember that our weekly spelling test will happen tomorrow morning, as there is no school for students Friday.

The first graders' book tonight is called "Witch Rules". Enjoy!

We had our first taste of Brain Boost today! If you haven't signed up yet for a Brain Boost shift, check yesterday's note (sent home in agenda pockets) and you can follow the directions on how to help out.

If you haven't already looked at the photos from yesterday, scroll down for a peek. We have some pretty cute witches in this class!

I'll end this post with a quick reminder to add your child's name in their outdoor clothing: boots, jackets, snow pants, mittens, toques ... everything! It's amazing how many articles of clothing end up in our school's Lost and Found. It's pretty easy to return things to their owners with names, however, so get out those sharpies and start labelling!

October 17, 2017

There will be a note regarding the school's Brain Boost program in your child's agenda pocket. Brain Boost fruits and veggies should be arriving soon!

There will be no school for students this Friday. Our weekly spelling test will be Thursday morning, instead.

The first graders' book to read aloud tonight is a scintillating descriptive tale about a witch. Enjoy!

We wrote some cool witch rules in class today; stand by for a book to come home listing those rules. Here's some photos of the authors of that witchy book:

October 16, 2017

School photos will be taken next Tuesday (October 24th). Information regarding this went home today in the agenda pockets.

The first graders' spelling list this week is based on the "ing" family. We're learning that if you know one word (like all), you can figure out lots of other words (like call, wall, mall, fall, tall, etc.).

The first grade students' book to read to a willing household member is "Meet Bart and Martha". Enjoy! (There is no need to return this book to school.)

October 13, 2017

We had a Fire Prevention Week presentation today. The students in Grades One and Two are bringing home fire prevention materials, including a pamphlet about designing an escape route from home. If your child completes the escape route plan with you and brings the form back to school, their name will be entered into a draw to become Fire Chief for a day! Some fun!

Spelling test books went home with the first graders. Please sign and return them Monday morning. T

The envelope reading book today is a short and sweet one: Jack-O-Faces. Again, please add the book's title and the date it was read on the envelope's paper.

Thanks to everyone who returned the permission forms for the upcoming school field trip. Please return the permission form asap if you haven't already done so. Thanks.

October 12, 2017

The first graders are entering a new phase with their home learning: they're going to read to the parents (or other caregivers) now, instead of the reverse! Check your child's backpack for a laminated envelope with a scintillating pumpkin story tucked inside. Once your child has read the book to you and you've gushed over their great reading, please print the book's title and the date it was read on the cover of the envelope. There is no need to return the pumpkin book; you can keep it for your home library. Happy reading, everyone!

The first graders have a spelling test tomorrow on the "ot" words. Study hard!

October 11, 2017

There will be a snack sale tomorrow morning at recess. Please remember that snacks will cost 50 cents this year.

October 10, 2017

This is Fire Prevention Week! We'll have a presentation from the fire department later this week, but if you'd like to learn more about fire prevention, there will be an Open House at the fire hall this evening from 6:30 - 8:00. There are lots of activities planned for the Open House; everyone hwo attends always has a good time!

The first graders are bringing home the new spelling list family of "ot" words this week. Have fun practicing!

Thanks to everyone who sent veggies for our stone soup! It was pretty deeelicious! We managed to write a spelling test, finish a Thanksgiving Day booklet (check agenda pockets), and make a turkey dinner bell this morning, as well as enjoy our pre-Thanksgiving feast! Here's a photo of our little cooks ringing their bells.

Have a great Thanksgiving weekend, everyone!

October 5, 2017

First graders, remember that you will have a spelling test tomorrow, and that you should bring a SMALL amount of cut-up veggies for our stone soup tomorrow.

Book orders - for first and second grade - are due tomorrow morning.

Please remember that there will be a noon dismissal tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

We had a very informative, interesting presentation in the gym this morning, from the Aquavan 150 staff. I learned that sea stars can move their stomachs outside their bodies to eat, then they tuck their tummies back into their bodies. Cool! If you'd like to visit the Aquavan, it'll be at Maligne Lake tomorrow from 11:00 - 4:00, at the Old Fire Hall on October 7, from 11:00 - 4:00, and at the Columbia Icefields on October 8, again from 11:00 - 4:00.

Here's yet another octopus video - one of an octopus escaping from a jar.

Swimming went very well today; check out our crew!

Remember to send swim gear for tomorrow and Thursday afternoons. Thanks!

The class wanted to review the video on how an octopus escaped from a boat. Click here to watch this amazing animal in action.

6. We will be creating a "Stone Soup" this Friday morning for the first graders to sample. We'll eat at 11:30, so the class will be ready for our regular noon dismissal. Please send a SMALL portion of cut-up veggies for this event. (A half cup will be plenty!) Thanks!

In anticipation of our Aqua-van visit, we watched some pretty amazing octopus videos. Just click here to see one of them.
