Home reading selection: The Mightly Mustangs (This book focuses on the "ight" family.)
There will be a Student-Led Conference/Family Games event tomorrow from 5:30 - 7:30. The evening will begin in our classroom with a few activities and then students and parents are invited to the library upstairs for board (and other) games.
It looks like Phoebe's babies have left the nest. They were flying in and out all day today. At the last check, the nest was empty. Phoebe gave us quite a show with her small family this time! (And she helped us reinforce that "ph" makes the "f" sound!)

Book for home reading: A Class Trip with Miss Royal
This week's spelling list contains "all" family words. We've thrown in the word "crawl" just to see who's paying attention.
We are skating tomorrow. Again, if anyone is available to help tie skate laces, we'd appreciate your help. As well, if anyone arrives at the arena ahead of us, setting out chairs in the changing area would be very helpful.
We've started a new journalling program. Each night a student will be chosen to bring home a stuffed creature (we've given it the name "Sam") and an accompanying journal. The student's job is to have fun with Sam, then write about what they did with Sam and add a photo or a picture to go with the writing. Sam should come back to school each morning, as a new companion for Sam will be chosen each day.

Word of the day: empathy
Tonight's reading selection: Garbage Day with Paige (This book emphasizes the "g" sound changing to a "j" one when the letter g is followed by an e, i, or y. There are some words that live outside the rule, like "get" and "give", but, generally, the rule works.)
We'll be skating again tomorrow afternoon. If anyone is available to help tie skates, that would be appreciated. Also, if you are able to help out and arrive before us, you could save us some time by setting out some chairs in the skate changing area. Thanks!
Book orders are due Friday.
There is no school Friday afternoon.

Reading for tonight: Too Small
We had an anti-discrimination presentation today. Brochures regarding the presentation are in the front pockets of the agendas.
There will be a cookie sale and a spelling test tomorrow. Also, Thomas and Bella's mom has offered to make everyone a waffle breakfast tomorrow morning. To help get us in the mood for breakfast at school, students can show up in their pyjamas. Breakfast will be served shortly after the morning bell. Thanks so much, Connie, for doing this for us! What a nice treat!
We'll be cross country skiing again tomorrow. (We're trying to get in all the skiing we can while the snow is good.) Please make sure your child has warm mitts, a hat, and appropriate winter wear.
Here are some x-c ski photos from today. (The students are progressing REALLY well with their skiing!)

Reading selection for the night: The Lost Wallet
We went for our first round of cross-country skiing today. (We have to take advantage of the snow in case it melts!) The class did VERY well! We're planning to go again tomorrow morning, so please ensure that your child has waterproof pants or snowpants, a hoodie or fleece under their winter jacket, a warm hat, and gloves or mitts. Thanks!

It was great to see everyone back in the school swing of things today - and it sounds like everyone had as great a holiday as I did!
Welcome to Cadence, our new student who just moved here from B.C. It's nice to have another boy in our crew!
The book for home reading tonight is "The Hard Worker".
We started a new component of our Language Arts program today: a "Word of the Day" one. Our word for today is initial.
The hummingbird webcam will have lots to see in the next little while, as Phoebe's eggs have hatched. We tuned in just in time this morning to see the babies getting fed. The young birds grow and change so quickly; they'll be ready to leave the nest in about a month's time. Click on the hummingbird link at the side to see the babies.
