(Review) word of the day: tardy

Sam's caregiver for the evening:  Chloe M.

Reminders for tomorrow:

1.  We are not meeting in the morning to sing "What I Am" but we are still meeting at the Activity Centre at 7:25 tomorrow evening for the community performance.

2.  Remember to arrive in pyjamas tomorrow morning - and for the evening performance!

3.  Study for the spelling test.

4.  If anyone else has pennies they'd like to donate to our museum fundraiser, we'd love to have them!  Karen Byers (the museum director) is so supportive of our school; it's nice to reciprocate.

5.  I'm sure Meghan wouldn't turn down any volunteers who would like to help with Brain Boost prep.  You can reach her at meghangifford@hotmail.com or by phone at 852- 3002.  Thanks to all those who've already volunteered.

Thanks, too, to everyone who came to help out with the skating program.  Many of the students improved  a lot - it was great to see them growing more confident and capable on the ice.  They wouldn't have been able to do it without all the parental support.  Thanks again!

We watched an amazing mudfish video today.  Click on the link below to have a peek.

(Review) word of the day: prompt

Reminders for tomorrow:

1.  We will be going to the Activity Centre tomorrow afternoon to watch a gymnastics performance, then to the Activity Centre gym for a quick practise of "Will I Am" on the stage, then to the arena for our final skating session.

2.  There will be a cookie sale tomorrow.  Dig out those quarters.

3.  Thanks to everyone who has sent pennies for our museum fund-raiser.  We'll be collecting pennies until Friday for this worthy cause.

4.  School newsletters went home today.

We've started a new unit on the sea.  As part of this theme, we watched a video on octopus camouflage.  Enjoy!  (Just click on the address below.  This really is an amazing video.)

(Review) word of the day: facetious

A note went home regarding our Friday morning performance of "What I Am".  Unfortunately, a snag has arisen regarding copyright issues and we will not be able to perform in the morning for Breakfast Television.  We are still on for the evening performance, however, so plan to be at the Activity Centre at 7:25 pm this Friday - with your pyjamas on, of course!

There will be a cookie sale this Thursday.  We will also be going to the Activity Centre for a gymnastics demonstration Thursday afternoon - immediately after attendance is taken and right before we go for our final skate at the arena.

Sam's caregiver for the weekend: Chloe O

A note went home today regarding an event we're planning for next Friday's Community Pyjama Day.  Hana's mom has invited all the first graders to perform (in pyjamas, of course!) at the firehall for Breakfast Television Friday morning, and at the Activity Centre next Friday evening.  We'll be singing "What I Am" by will. i. am.  Please read the note reagarding our performances, and return the bottom of the note Monday morning so we can get an idea of how many students will be able to participate.  We also sent song lyrics home, so students can practise.  For more information on the Community Pyjama Day, please visit www.findthecommonthread.com website.

It's our class's turn to take over  the morning Brain Boost program.  We're on from Monday, February 25 until Friday, March 15.  The Brain Boost program provides healthy fruit or veggie snacks to every class. The fruit/veggies are all supplied; we just need to get the people power together to clean and cut the food, then distribute (or have children do the deliveries) the food to the classrooms. It doesn't take long  (maybe 20 - 30 minutes per morning), and is well-appreciated by the students.  If everyone pitches in and volunteers for a morning or two, the commitment is pretty minimal.  (We have 15 students, and 15 mornings to cover, so if everyone takes one morning, that would be great...) If you are able to help out, please contact Addi's mom at meghangifford@hotmail.com or give her a call at 852-3002.  Thanks so much!

Enjoy the weekend!

Word of the day: legible

Our  spelling list this week is made of words from the "ill" family.

There will be no skating this Thursday, as the grade one classes will be participating in the winter carnaval at Centennial Park for the afternoon.  Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the carnaval. Snowpants, a ski helmet (we have some to loan if your child needs one) and warm, dry mittens are MUSTS for Thursday afternoon.

It's our turn to host a school cookie sale.  Please send 2 dozen cookies (or cupcakes or rice krispie squares or popcorn balls or whatever you'd like!) to the class this Thursday morning.  Thanks!

We had a lovely surprise this morning, when Cadence's mom arrived to sing and perform some magic for us.  (How DID she get that colouring book to change itself?!)  Thanks so much, Kiki the Eco Elf!  (She's the tall one in the back row with the green hair.)

Word of the day: amorous

Sam's caregiver for this evening: Briezja

Great job on the reading/writing homework!  Some students are really going to town on the writing - very impressive!

Remember that if your child brings valentine cards or treats to school tomorrow, they should bring a card or treat for everyone in the room.  In case you lost the list that was sent home last week, the students' names are: Briezja, Beenadd, Chloe O., Cadence, Kairos, Bella, Chloe M., Rowan, Addi, Logan, Angelo, Theo, Thomas, Tianna and Hana.

The student council has organized a "Wear Red or Pink Day" for tomorrow.  Students are invited (but not required) to dress in red or pink - and even to wear pyjamas, if they are red or pink!

A former student, Chris Joly, joined our class for art this afternoon.  We anticipate that he'll come to our class regularly on Wednesday afternoons to help out with our art projects.  Welcome, Chris!

Word of the day: matrimony

Sam's caregiver tonight is Cadence.  (Logan was the lucky boy who got Sam for the extended weekend.)

This week's spelling list was designed by the class to follow a Valentines theme.  The words are: love, kiss, hug, osculate, embrace, Cupid and Valentine.

The at-home reading program has changed a bit.  The books are now coming home in a plastic bag, accompanied by a printing book.  After the student reads the book aloud, they pick a sentence starter from inside the printing book's front cover, then write something about what they've just read.  If they get stuck on how to spell a word, they should ask themselves the same question they ask when they're stuck on reading: What do I know about this word?  It's amazing how often they can figure out their own spelling when they do this.

Word of the day: cherish

Sam's caregiver until tomorrow: Addi

The home reading selections will now be books that the students have selected themselves.  Enjoy the reading!

Please remember that school for this week will wrap up tomorrow at lunch so that staff can attend the teacher's convention in Edmonton.

I'll send home a list of student names tomorrow so that anyone who wants to prepare for Valentine's Day can get started.  (Students are not required to bring Valentines for each other, but if they do choose to bring them, they must bring one for everyone.)  We'll have a Valentine's Day celebration in our room next Thursday afternoon, in lieu of our regular skating afternoon.  (If anyone would like to send snacks for our party, we'll accept them with our gratitude!)

Word of the day: osculate

Book title for tonight: A Birthday Surprise for Goldie

We will be skating tomorrow - remember skates, helmets, mitts, etc.  Thanks in advance to those parents who will be able to help tie skates again.

This is a short week; students are off Wednesday at noon to allow teachers to travel to and attend the teachers' convention in Edmonton.  Because of the abbreviated week, there will be no spelling list or test this week.

The students wrote kissing advice today:  Never, EVER kiss a porcupine, a thunderstorm, a charging buffalo, an eagle, a t-Rex, a crocodile, a vampire, a grizzly bear, an alien, a shark, a night fury, or a firecracker that's about to explode.  Check out the photos of their puckers on the bulletin board outside the classroom!
